Comments: Very interesting to see the picture of St .Francis at Kesgrave. Sgt. Smith was a great friend and frequent visitor, with his buddy Pfc. Floyd Cones, to our home at The Old Vicarage, Bramford, when I was a young boy. They would bicycle all the way over from Martlesham to bring us canned dried eggs, coffee, candy and all sorts of wonderful things! Irving Smith was a gifted artist who worked for a dept. store in Washington DC before the war, his job in the USAF was painting the decorations on aircraft.

Comments: As a kid in the sixties we used to play in this tower. We used to live in the RAF houses in ( I think) Anson Drive? Just next to the deserted runway. I remember that there was a rifle range, plastics factory ( made the christmas decorations for Oxford Street London) Lawnmower shop, further across the airfield was a restored tarmac landing strip used by radio controlled model aircraft. A local garage used to sell old ( 1940s) cars as wrecks with a tank full of petrol and delivered them to the runway, some older kids would buy them and run them up and down the runway till the petrol ran out and then would go and get another one!

I was head boy at martlesham primary school, the first head boy in the new school.
Happy days
Steve Gullick

I know he spent some time at Martlesham Heath. I am trying to find out his regiment and if I can get his medals for his grandson which he never claimed
He was called Sgt,William Arnold Lees and his RAF number was 525186

If anybody can help me and point me in the right direction I would appreciate it/

Comments: My dad, Phil Kaplan from Brooklyn/NY, was in the 8th and a fire fighter at MH. Before his death he spent many an hour talking about life there in 1943-45; so it was wonderful to find this site. Now to begin thinking about visiting the next time I am in the UK. If anyone reading this knows anything about my dad's life (or adventures) in the war, please let me know. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

Comments: The Control Tower Museum is a fantastic memorial to those who were stationed at "The Heath", and those of the RAF and the U.S. 356th Fighter Group who died serving their countries from the airfield.
It's also a credit to the dedicated band of volunteers who have worked so hard to set up the Museum.
The monthly meetings are also great fun, and all the members are so friendly.
