Message: Would love to know if any gentlemen out there remembers
my nan. It would have been about 1939-40, her name was Violet Plummer
at that time, would love some help to see if she is remembered. She was
in the WRAF I believe at Woodbridge. But I think she used to go around
with some American lads who were there at that time, I thought it would
be a nice surprise for her.
Many Thanks if you can help.

Message: If any of you are reading this guestbook for the
first time and have never visited the MHAS Control Tower
Museum, you really don't know what you are missing.
The place oozes nostalgia. Whilst browsing the artefacts,
listen to music from a bygone era or hear the magic sound
of Merlin engines, not forgetting to have a cup of tea from the NAAFI.
I am unconnected
with the museum but visit it frequently and appreciate
the many efforts of all concerned for its funding and upkeep
and to the website manager, thank you one and all.

Comments: I lived at No 78 Deben Avenue from September 21st
1960-December 1972. I was born in Ipswich and I grew up in
this house, which was not 150yds from the Control Tower.
As children,we were told not to play in the control tower,
for safety reasons, as for many years it lay abandoned. But
my memories of the airfield remain vivid, although I didn't
see any wartime activity there.
I can remember many of the
events during the Sixties:Watching the Avro 748 ground trials
as a small boy. Playing on the pillbox adjacent to the tower.
Flying model aircraft on the old runway, learning to ride
my bike on the perimeter track.Picking up intact clay pigeons
from the gun club (mother used them for pot stands); Watching
the parachutists, one landing in the trees near Dobbs lane;
light plane crash about 1968.The Suffolk show in about1969.
(The army had a Chieftain tank, practising on the Airfield);
Finding the old H/P fort near the runways, amongst the long
grass.I didn't know what it was then! There was a Mrs Adams
that lived down Deben Ave .Apparently used to do the US airmans'
laundry. Showed me a photo of air force personnel standing
on the tower Balcony.
Sadly, my parents emigrated to Australia in 1972, thus leaving
behind many fond memories of this historic aerodrome. I have
Gordon's book, which is an unbeatable reference to the airfield.
I returned to the site, after a long absence on 26th October
2003. I remain forever grateful to Mr Norman Rose, who, in
his own time, opened the control tower especially for my
viewing. And, I might add, opening it again for me, so I
could retrieve my reading glasses I left on a display stand!!!
You
guys are great, for keeping such an important piece of aviation
history alive.
Many thanks.

Comments: I have just bought a property at Hilton Road, Martlesham
Heath (the old RAF quarters). We took down the shed and they
had used pallets from what could be some old packing cases.
They have the name as "Cpl & Mrs J Devlin" and printed
on the pallets are his military number. I have kept the pallets and attached
to one were their name and the address but when we took this off, on
the reverse are a list of notes that they had to follow. You can gladly
have these if you think they are of any interested but also,
we were wondering who this couple were. I am only 35 but am interested
in the history of the property. I can be contacted on 01473 631484, if
anyone has any info.

Comments: Hello,
My father, James G. Charlton, served with the 356th FG 360th SQ in Jan 1945 until the end of the war. His plane was named Virgie Mae PI-B. He stayed at Playford Hall. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 79.
I would be grateful to receive any information or memories anybody might have.
After the war my father worked for Frank Lloyd Wright at Telisen
east and helped him build Telisen west in Arizona. He later
became an architect working in California and Hawaii, designing
houses. A number of them are still standing. If anyone knew
my father during his time in the USAAF, please contact me.
Thank
you. Tim

Comments: Hello,
I am looking for information for my Dad about his dad, Arthur
Stephens. Somehow or other he has very limited information
about his time in the RAF.
All he remembers is that he was based
at Martlesham around 1941, and remembers him chatting about
friends called "Wiggin" and Dan Flanagan who after
the war ran a pub called the Three Furnaces at Kingswinford!
If
any body could point me in the right direction to find out
what squadron he was in/what he did I would be very grateful.
I
remember an amazing photo album that Dad had of Grandad - with
elephants, so he must have been abroad somewhere - India?
Thanks
Auzy

Comments: Thanks to Linn Barringer for leading me to this
site. I was at Bentwaters and Shepherds Grove from 1951 to
1955 in the 91st and 78th Fighter Squadrons. One day I had
to land at Martlesham Heath with a complete electrical failure
in an F-84F in August or September 1955. Lousy weather and
the engine flamed out as I touched down on the runway. I
have always felt that if the runway was not there, I would
have had to bailout. So Martlesham saved my life and an expensive
aircraft. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for
Martlesham Heath. Thank you all.
