Remembrance Day Service

Report by Tarkey Barker, 10 November 2002

Memorial Service
Barrack Square Martlesham Heath

The weather was kind in the afternoon, saving the participants from a soaking, as had befallen the morning parades.

There was an array of medals, and a moving ceremony, which paid tribute to all who had made the ultimate sacrifice, including those from Martlesham Heath.

Ken Wilding from the Royal British Legion was the Parade Marshall - possibly for the last time, as he is considering retiring after many years service.

The 356th Air Training Corps from Felixstowe marched on to the barrack Square to the sound of The RAF March played by the Salvation Army Band.

After the order to ‘Stand at ease’ an address was given by Gordon Kinsey, President of the Martlesham Heath Aviation Society, followed by an address by The Rev Brian Lillystone, who officiated over the prayers and hymns.

Our special guest Lt Col (Coyote) Chris Choate of the 48th Fighter Wing 480th Group, based at Lakenheath, gave an address.

The parade was called to ‘Attention’ for the Last Post and the dipping of the Standards. The wreaths were laid, followed by a silent tribute, and Reveille. The Parade was called to ‘Stand at ease’ and the congregation sang the Hymn "Crimond". The Parade was called to ‘Attention’ for the British and American Anthems.
